Based in Park City, Utah, this 6-week field course serves students from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Illinois, and Michigan State University. The course is taught by faculty from the participating universities and is designed to prepare our students for successful careers in the geosciences. We emphasize the traditional techniques of geology that provide a strong foundation for whatever modern technologies your future career might bring. Students learn to use field observations and Brunton compasses to map geology onto topographic maps, construct geologic cross sections, compile detailed rock descriptions, and measure stratigraphic sections. Our exercises involve mapping in the Wasatch and Uinta Mountain Ranges of Utah; along with multiple-day camping trips to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, the San Rafael Swell of southeastern Utah, and the gold fields of Nevada.
